Get a Free Tree Program

Tree Planting

Brochure cover of Torontos Street Tree program deicting a large mature tree

Trees work hard.  They absorb water, clean the air, provide shade, reduce erosion, flooding and wind tunnels, decrease heating and cooling costs and increase property values.  There is a growing body of international research that supports the importance of maintaining healthy, sustainable urban forests.

Toronto has adopted the goal of increasing tree canopy coverage from 26.6 - 28% to 40% across the city.  One of the primary ways of achieving this goal is through planting of new trees, with a focus on planting large canopy species.

Help grow Toronto's urban forest by planting a tree on your property or get a free tree for the City-owned land in front of your home or business.

A recently planted street treeUrban Forestry plants trees on City-owned land in front of residential, industrial and commercial properties for free.  Periodically, Urban Forestry will canvass neighbourhoods for tree planting opportunities.

To learn more about the Get a Free Tree Program and the species available, download the brochure (PDF) or call 311.

When you're ready to order your new free tree, call 311 or visit 311's service request website.

Interested in a tree for your backyard?

Contact LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests) which is a local non-profit group dedicated to improving Toronto's urban forest.  They offer a subsidized backyard tree planting program for Toronto residents.  The service includes on-site advice on appropriate species and planting location, a 1.2 to 1.8m tall native tree, and the planting service.  Native shrubs are also available.

Contact LEAF at 416-413-9244 or on the web at www.yourleaf.org/

Interested in tree planting volunteer opportunities?

Urban Forestry offers a range of volunteer opportunities in parks and ravines across the city.  Tree planting, stewardship and trail building opportunities are available spring, summer and fall. These programs are a great way to get your hands dirty and contribute to the City's tree canopy goals.
